State Department denounces Iranian regime’s crackdown on Christians

U.S. Condemns Iran’s Crackdown on Christians Amid Rising Tensions

The U.S. State Department has expressed deep concern over Iran’s harsh treatment of Christians, highlighting the case of Ghazal Marzban, a Catholic woman currently on a hunger strike in Evin prison, known for its severe conditions. Marzban was sentenced to nearly 10 years in prison merely for practicing her faith. Reports indicate her health has significantly worsened, though her current status remains unknown.

This condemnation follows recent military actions aimed at Iran, prompted by attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. A State Department spokesperson stated that the Iranian regime continues to persecute religious minorities, which includes Iranian Christians. The spokesperson called for the immediate release of all political prisoners.

Marzban’s case is alarming, especially considering her conversion to Christianity led to her being barred from taking her bar exam. Her husband, who also converted, has been denied necessary medical treatment for his Parkinson’s disease.

Human rights organizations note a troubling trend: the Iranian government is intensifying its persecution of Christians. Arrests of Christian converts have surged—jumping from 139 in 2024 to 254 in 2025—paired with longer prison sentences. This pattern suggests that the regime views religious conversion as a major security threat.

Furthermore, reports reveal that authorities are seeking to evict families living near St. Peter’s Church in Tehran, a historic Protestant site. Critics argue that these actions are intended to intimidate the broader Christian community in Iran.

Experts emphasize that these developments should not be seen as isolated incidents; rather, they are part of a long history of oppression against Christians dating back to the 1979 revolution. Many Christian institutions have faced mounting pressure, leading to arrests, property seizures, and harassment of church leaders.

In light of the ongoing situation, voices from the international community stress the importance of targeted sanctions against Iranian officials involved in these human rights abuses. There are calls for governments worldwide, especially those in Europe and the U.K., to prioritize discussions on religious freedom in their dealings with Iran.

The plight of Christians in Iran remains grim, and activists warn that if the regime continues to regain its control, the consequences could extend far beyond its borders.
