JORDAN VALLEY: Israel Strengthens Border Security Amid Rising Threats

After a terror attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, Israel has established its 96th army division to enhance security along its border with Jordan. This move comes as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) aims to address new security challenges and protect the nation.

Military officials from the IDF provided insights into their operations, emphasizing the strategic nature of the Jordan border. While described as a “peace border,” officials stress that it remains a point of interest in regional conflicts. “The other side knows how critical this area is,” one military source mentioned, highlighting the longstanding peace agreement between Jordan and Israel established in 1994.

In recent times, Jordan has faced protests supporting Hamas, indicating rising tensions in the region. Following the devastating Hamas attack that claimed over 1,200 lives, including more than 40 Americans, the IDF has reactivated 45 military bases that were previously shut down in the late 1990s. This division now oversees bases filled with bunkers in the Jordan Valley, a historically significant area.

The IDF has reported successfully stopping over 20 smuggling attempts involving weapons and drugs this year alone. Their objective is to ensure safety and stability for all who live in the Jordan Valley, which spans a vast area and is vital to the region’s history.

To bolster its defenses, Israel is constructing a new wall along the Jordan border. This effort reflects lessons learned from past conflicts, as officials noted. Importantly, the IDF emphasized that there are legal points of entry for those wishing to come to Israel from Jordan.

The new border security setup is layered. It includes a military outpost, a wall, and the military bases housing Division 96. Additionally, Israel has increased its reserve forces, with many former soldiers stepping forward to serve again to protect their homeland.

Tensions have risen as Iranian forces have targeted the Jordan Valley. The bunkers within the military outposts serve as shelter during such attacks. The ongoing conflict highlights the fragility of peace in the Middle East and the shared goal of Israel and Jordan to maintain stability along their border.
