Dallas Cowboys Come Close to Draft Day Deal for Caleb Downs

The Dallas Cowboys recently revealed how close they were to trading up for Caleb Downs, a talented safety, during the draft. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer shared that there was a planned trade with the Kansas City Chiefs to secure Downs, but the deal didn’t go through. Instead, the Chiefs opted to trade up for Mansoor Delane, which prompted the Cowboys to change their approach. They successfully moved from the 12th to the 11th pick, still managing to select Downs, who was at the top of their draft list.

Team Strategy and Selection

Coach Schottenheimer emphasized that the team had identified four prospects they liked, with Downs being their top choice. They believed his skills and intelligence made him a perfect fit for their defense. After the Chiefs’ decision to draft Delane, the Cowboys made a smart adjustment and were able to get Downs anyway. His ability to play various positions, from deep safety to covering slot receivers, gives the Cowboys much-needed flexibility.

Insights from the Coach

During a recent podcast appearance, Schottenheimer detailed how much the Cowboys valued Downs. “We targeted four players we felt would fit perfectly with our team, and Caleb was the first on that list. We had a trade lined up with Kansas City, but they moved early in the draft,” he explained. This aligns with the high regard many have for Downs, who’s also seen as a breakout candidate for the upcoming training camp.

Contract and Future Impact

Caleb Downs joins the Cowboys on a rookie contract, allowing the team to maintain financial flexibility in the coming years. This rookie deal doesn’t come with complicated clauses, making it easier for the management to plan their roster.

Expectations Moving Forward

As training camp approaches, Downs now faces high expectations. His versatility could provide the coaching staff with opportunities to try out different formations, whether as a typical safety or a defender against passing teams. Although the potential trade with Kansas City shaped the Cowboys’ draft night, it ultimately didn’t stop them from landing Downs. Now, the focus shifts to whether Downs can meet the confidence the organization has placed in him.
