Leah Stewart, an Australian mother and teacher, is on the road to recovery after a shark attack at Coogee Beach in Sydney. Following the incident, she lost her arm and faced significant challenges, but continues to draw strength from messages of support coming in from around the world, her family shared.

On a GoFundMe update, her brother Joshua Stewart noted, “We’ve been sharing some of the beautiful messages we’ve received with Leah. She has cherished these words of kindness during her difficult days.”

Leah has struggled with sleep while recovering but has found comfort in the love shown by her family, friends, and even strangers. Joshua mentioned, “She has been revisiting these messages on her sleepless nights. They truly give her comfort and strength.”

The attack occurred on June 13 while Leah was swimming close to the shore. She suffered serious injuries, including multiple bites, lacerations, and heavy blood loss. Emergency services rushed her to the hospital where she had numerous surgeries, including the amputation of one arm.

After spending ten days in a medically induced coma, Leah woke up and was able to tell her mother and partner, Fernando, “I love you.” Her first thoughts were for her 1-year-old daughter, August, her brother remarked.

Joshua emphasized that their family is grateful for the overwhelming support they have received, even as they navigate the challenging situation. “Thank you!” he said, expressing appreciation for everyone’s kindness.

A fundraiser has been set up to assist Leah and her family with recovery costs, including prosthetics and rehabilitation. They also expressed gratitude towards the lifesavers, first responders, and medical teams who helped Leah after her ordeal.

“It’s heartbreaking for our family to witness this happen to someone so full of life,” Joshua concluded, underscoring their shock and sadness over the incident.
