U.S. Ambassador Confronts Iran at U.N. Security Council Meeting
In a recent meeting of the U.N. Security Council, U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz criticized Iran, asserting that the country would not suppress the council’s discussions. His comments came after Iranian representatives claimed that council members were misrepresenting Iran’s recent actions against neighboring Gulf nations.
Waltz addressed Iranian diplomat Amir Saeid Iravani directly, saying, “This is the United States of America. This is the United Nations Security Council. You will not silence us.”
This exchange occurred during an urgent meeting prompted by drone and missile strikes launched by Iran against Bahrain and Kuwait, following U.S. airstrikes targeting Iranian positions.
Gulf Nations Condemn Iranian Attacks
The foreign ministers of several Gulf nations strongly condemned the Iranian drone attacks. Iravani defended his country, saying that the council should not have met and accused the U.S., Bahrain, and other nations of spreading false information. He claimed the U.S. is using lies to justify its aggressive actions.
Waltz countered by displaying images of the damage caused by these Iranian attacks, including destroyed homes and infrastructure in Bahrain. He challenged Iravani to deny the reality faced by victims of the strikes, stating, “Are these lies? … I’d say not.”
Bahrain’s Foreign Minister, Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, reported that since late February, the island has experienced 808 attacks, including hundreds of drones and missiles targeting civilian areas and leading to several casualties.
Escalating Tensions Between Washington and Tehran
The tensions between the U.S. and Iran have been escalating, with both sides accusing each other of failing to maintain a fragile ceasefire. President Trump recently indicated that further U.S. military actions may be necessary if Iran does not change its behavior.
The back-and-forth at the U.N. illustrates the growing frustrations on both sides, with accusations and counter-accusations emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
