Cristiano Ronaldo Addresses Retirement Speculations After Portugal’s Dramatic Win

Cristiano Ronaldo has put to rest the retirement talks surrounding his international career following Portugal’s thrilling 2-1 victory over Croatia, which secured their spot in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16.

The Portugal captain, who scored his first-ever goal in a World Cup knockout match, was questioned about whether this tournament could be the end of his illustrious international journey. Speculation had intensified prior to Portugal’s Round of 32 match, especially after Ronaldo’s sister, Katia Aveiro, suggested that this World Cup might be his “last dance” in the national team colors.

“The info I have from a reliable source is that this is his last dance,” she told Sport TV. She expressed that while a farewell isn’t immediate, it’s on the horizon.

Ronaldo, however, chose not to engage in retirement discussions, stating that he would only focus on his future after Portugal’s World Cup adventure concludes. “It’s not important now,” he told reporters. “I will talk to my family after the tournament, whether we win or lose, and then make the right decision.”

The 41-year-old emphasized that he no longer makes decisions impulsively. “I want to enjoy the moment and support my national team,” he added.

Excitement in Toronto: Portugal vs. Croatia

The match in Toronto offered plenty of drama as Portugal trailed after an early second-half goal from Ivan Perisic. Ronaldo equalized with a penalty in the 68th minute, marking his first goal in the knockout stages of a FIFA World Cup after six attempts across various tournaments.

Substitute Goncalo Ramos scored a last-minute winner, propelling Portugal into the last 16, where they will face off against Spain in a highly-anticipated matchup.

Ronaldo’s performance signals a remarkable comeback after a challenging start, where he struggled to score in Portugal’s opening game against the Democratic Republic of Congo. Many had begun to question whether age was finally catching up with the renowned forward. However, Ronaldo silenced the doubters with two goals in Portugal’s second match and another crucial one against Croatia.

Reflecting on Early Struggles

Looking back at his difficult start, Ronaldo admitted it had been a tough time. “It felt almost like I had retired from soccer,” he said. “But I stayed strong because hard work is what I believe in most.”

As Portugal prepares to face Spain, Ronaldo remains focused solely on the present, leaving retirement talks for another day.

Every fan is eager to see how far Portugal can go in the tournament, and for Ronaldo, every game could be a significant moment in his storied career.
