Pochettino Defends Balogun After Controversial Red Card

In a tense match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino stood by striker Folarin Balogun following his controversial red card. The U.S. secured a crucial 2-0 win, marking their first knockout stage victory in the World Cup since 2002.

The win not only pushed the U.S. into the last 16 of the tournament but also set up a challenging match against Belgium. Unfortunately for the team, Balogun will be sidelined due to an automatic one-match suspension after his dismissal.

Balogun scored the opening goal just before halftime, bringing his tournament tally to three. However, things took a turn in the 64th minute when he was initially booked for a tackle that connected with the ankle of Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemovic. After a video review, the referee upgraded his card to a red.

Pochettino expressed his frustration, insisting that the red card was unwarranted. “For me, it was never a red card,” he stated. He explained that Balogun’s intent was not to harm the opponent and described the situation as an ordinary part of the game, especially when competing for the ball.

Bosnia’s coach, Sergej Barbarez, supported the referee’s decision. However, Pochettino continued to defend Balogun, noting the striker’s disappointment. “There was no intention to step on the player,” he added, expressing hope that the team could advance further and allow Balogun to rejoin them.

Teammate Christian Pulisic also spoke out, saying Balogun “didn’t deserve the red card,” calling it an unfortunate decision.

U.S. Team Displays Resilience

Despite being down a man, the U.S. team showcased remarkable discipline, maintaining their focus to claim a memorable victory. After Balogun’s send-off, Malik Tillman solidified the win with a stunning free-kick, highlighting his talent and importance to the squad.

Pochettino applauded Tillman’s performance, stating, “Malik is an amazing player, full of talent.” He emphasized that the team’s composure illustrated their growth throughout the tournament.

“It’s hard to put into words how we feel because the players were outstanding,” he shared. “Every match in the World Cup is tough, and the maturity of this team over the past six weeks has been incredible.”

As the team looks ahead to the knockout rounds, their focus remains on continued improvement and teamwork.
