India Secures Victory Over Bangladesh in T20 World Cup Match

MANCHESTER, England — On Thursday, India triumphed over Bangladesh by five wickets, making a significant step towards their goals in the Women’s T20 World Cup. To advance to the semifinals, India now faces a crucial match against Australia this Sunday at the packed Lord’s stadium.

Despite some lapses in the field, India managed to restrict Bangladesh to a total of 136 runs for eight wickets. The team successfully chased down the target, finishing at 139 for five with 19 balls to spare.

India’s captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, expressed confidence for the upcoming clash with Australia. “We’ll gain a lot of confidence if we win that match,” she stated.

Meanwhile, South Africa continued to apply pressure by dominating the Netherlands with a score of 208 for one, thanks to opener Tazmin Brits, who scored her first T20 century.

Shafali Verma Shines for India

Bangladesh’s decision to drop Shafali Verma early in the match proved costly. Verma helped her team bounce back during the powerplay, scoring 53 runs off just 29 balls before being stumped. Her performance paved the way for a comfortable chase, with contributions from Yastika Bhatia (23 runs) and Jemimah Rodrigues (26 runs).

Verma expressed her disappointment at getting out. “I would’ve been happier had I batted through,” she said. Although India had a few fielding mistakes, including dropping four catches, Bangladesh struggled to capitalize on these errors.

The only notable scores from Bangladesh came from Juairiya Ferdous with 33 runs and captain Nigar Sultana, who managed 32 runs.

Brits Shines for South Africa

In another match, Tazmin Brits led South Africa to a convincing victory over the Netherlands, scoring an impressive 114 runs off 69 balls. This marked her first T20 century, achieved after 82 matches. She built solid partnerships totaling 121 runs with Laura Wolvaardt, who scored 45, and 87 runs with Annerie Dercksen, who added 37.

Brits started strong, contributing significantly during the powerplay. She reached her century with a magnificent six and finished with two more sixes and 15 boundaries.

The Netherlands made a quick start but fell behind as South Africa’s bowlers cleaned up the tail. Phoebe Molkenboer, Sanya Khurana, and Sterre Kalis got the Dutch to 100 runs but lost seven wickets in their last 20 runs. Ayabonga Khaka led South Africa’s successful bowling attack with figures of 3 for 19.

On a busy cricket schedule, Scotland is set to face Sri Lanka on Friday.
