Israel Responds to UN Report Alleging Targeting of Palestinian Children
Israel has expressed strong opposition to a recent United Nations Commission of Inquiry (COI) report that claims the country intentionally targeted Palestinian children. This new report follows previous allegations from the Independent International Commission regarding issues in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, which some criticized as fuel for antisemitism and violence.
The latest findings, released on Wednesday, state that evidence suggests Israeli authorities have committed genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, particularly in Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
Israeli UN Ambassador’s Reaction
Danny Danon, Israel’s Ambassador to the U.N., described the report as a biased political attack disguised as a formal investigation. He accused the commission of making conclusions without thorough investigation, stating that it disregards Hamas’ actions, including the October 7 massacre, and the plight of hostages. Danon emphasized Israel’s right to defend its citizens against terrorism, regardless of perceived injustices in international reports.
While the COI and the Human Rights Council have not responded to these statements, U.N. spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric clarified that the report isn’t something Secretary-General Antonio Guterres would comment on.
Claims of Targeting Children
Srinivasan Muralidhar, the Chair of the COI, asserted that the evidence supports claims of deliberate targeting of Palestinian children by Israeli forces. He noted that even after a ceasefire, attacks against children persisted, suggesting a neglect of international legal obligations for their protection.
Criticism of the Report
Anne Bayefsky, director of Human Rights Voices, criticized the commission’s methods, suggesting that it prioritizes one viewpoint while ignoring significant data. She highlighted the omission of tragic incidents involving Israeli children who have suffered due to violence.
Jonathan Conricus, a former spokesman for the Israeli Defense Forces, labeled the report flawed, accusing it of lacking substantiated evidence and being inconsistent in its claims. He argued that the findings are part of a larger effort to delegitimize Israel.
Salo Aizenberg, from the media watchdog group HonestReporting, criticized the report for failing to recognize the actions of Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, instead portraying Israel as the aggressor without context.
As tensions continue, both sides seem entrenched in their narratives, complicating the path toward understanding and peace.
