Woman Recovers and Speaks After Shark Attack in Sydney
A woman in Sydney, Australia, has started to regain her voice after spending ten days in an induced coma following a shark attack at Coogee Beach. Leah Stewart, a teacher in her mid-30s, spoke her first words this week, expressing love to her family while recovering in the hospital.
Her brother shared on a fundraising page that after several surgeries, doctors were able to reduce Leah’s sedation, allowing her to wake up briefly. “Her first words were ‘I love you,’” he said. Leah’s first thoughts were about her young daughter, August, as she inquired about her well-being.
Leah underwent multiple surgeries, including one that resulted in the amputation of her arm. She had been swimming near the shore when the shark attacked, biting her legs and arms. She was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition on June 13.
Her family described her recovery as miraculous and expressed gratitude for the support they have received. “This feels like a miracle and is everything we have hoped and prayed for,” her brother mentioned.
While Leah remains in critical care, her family is hopeful about her future recovery. Sadly, her incident follows a wave of shark attacks in Australia, including several fatal encounters this year.
