July is gearing up to be an exciting month for movie lovers in India, as two blockbuster films are set to hit theaters. The much-anticipated The Odyssey will premiere on July 17, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to be released on July 30. Even though both films are still a few weeks away, they are already creating buzz with advance ticket sales. Tickets for The Odyssey became available on June 8, and fans recently started booking for Spider-Man: Brand New Day on June 17. Ticket sales for both films are soaring, suggesting they will have a strong opening at the box office.
Interestingly, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will not have an IMAX release, a change in tradition for the superhero franchise. Instead, fans will have to enjoy it in formats like PXL, 4DX, and ScreenX. Sony Pictures India confirmed that while the film won’t be in IMAX, it will still be screened in premium formats for a grand viewing experience.
This decision has slightly dampened excitement among fans. According to sources, the absence of an IMAX release is due to The Odyssey coming out just two weeks earlier. This film is the first to be shot completely with IMAX’s 70mm film cameras, meaning it will occupy the IMAX screens exclusively for three weeks.
After that period, theatre operators will assess the audience’s response to see if The Odyssey continues to play in IMAX or if it would be reduced. Given the success of Christopher Nolan’s previous film, Oppenheimer, in IMAX, it’s likely that The Odyssey will stay on those screens for quite some time. This means that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will miss out on the IMAX experience.
Despite this setback, enthusiasm for Spider-Man: Brand New Day remains strong. Fans have started booking tickets in other high-end formats. They seem to appreciate that Christopher Nolan’s films often deserve the IMAX treatment for the best experience.
Moreover, Spider-Man: Brand New Day isn’t the only Marvel film missing an IMAX release. Avengers: Doomsday, set to release in December, is also expected to skip IMAX in several markets due to its scheduling conflict with Dune: Part Three. Disney has announced plans to introduce a new certification called ‘Infinity Vision’ for its superhero flicks.
Excitement continues to build for both films as they approach their release dates!
