Portugal Dominates Uzbekistan in 5-0 Victory
Cristiano Ronaldo and the Portugal national team silenced their critics with a convincing 5-0 win over Uzbekistan, marking their first victory in the 2026 World Cup. Ronaldo shone brightly, scoring two goals and becoming his country’s top scorer in World Cup history. Contributions also came from Nuno Mendes, who scored from a free kick, along with an own goal from Uzbekistan’s Abdukodir Khusanov and a late goal from substitute Rafael Leao. This win was a much-needed response after their disappointing draw with DR Congo in their opening match.
Ronaldo opened the scoring just six minutes into the game, driving a half-volley into the net from Joao Cancelo’s cross. With this goal, he made history as the first male player to score in six different World Cups. Later, he acted as if he was going to take a free-kick, but Mendes stepped up and sent a low shot into the bottom corner.
Uzbekistan thought they had leveled the match when Azizjon Ganiev struck from distance, but their celebrations were cut short when VAR ruled the goal out for a foul on Cancelo during the build-up. Ronaldo made his presence felt again, receiving a wonderful through-ball from Bruno Fernandes and skillfully sliding his shot past goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov.
Before halftime, Khusanov managed to stop Ronaldo from scoring his hat-trick with a goal-line clearance, but he couldn’t prevent a low corner from Fernandes that deflected off him and into the net, making it 4-0 for Portugal just before the hour mark.
As Ronaldo sought his third goal, Nematov denied him multiple times. Finally, it was Leao who sealed the victory with a powerful shot into the top corner, ensuring a dominant performance by Portugal.
