Construction Begins on Quantum Computing Facility in Moreton Bay, Australia

Moreton Bay, Australia—PsiQuantum has officially broken ground on a new facility at Moreton Bay Central, where it will develop the world’s first large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer. The event was celebrated by notable figures, including Minister for Industry and Innovation, Senator Tim Ayres; Queensland Minister for Science and Innovation, Andrew Powell; and Moreton Bay Mayor, Peter Flannery. They were joined by PsiQuantum’s CEO, Victor Peng, and Co-Founder, Prof. Jeremy O’Brien.

The new facility aims to lead the way in quantum computing technology, which has the potential to revolutionize various fields including healthcare, materials science, energy solutions, and finance. As the demand for advanced computing grows alongside artificial intelligence, quantum computing is poised to tackle some of the world’s toughest challenges and provide critical data insights.

Victor Peng, CEO of PsiQuantum, remarked, “Building a quantum computer that addresses real-world issues is an extraordinary engineering task. For years, quantum computing has promised to change what we can achieve through technology, and today in Australia, we are turning that promise into a reality.” He expressed gratitude for the various levels of government support that made this step possible.

Prof. O’Brien added that Australia has played a vital role in this journey. “It’s fitting that we celebrate the start of this project in a location close to where the foundational work in quantum technology began. This facility will enhance Australia’s capability and support the development of a skilled workforce for future computing innovations.”

The construction of PsiQuantum’s facility will occur in phases, with options for future expansion. Initially, preparations will be made for a major cryoplant, which will be essential for cooling the quantum computer currently being developed. This is the largest of its kind ordered for quantum computing, expected to make its debut by late 2027.

The initiative is set to generate highly skilled jobs across various sectors, including engineering, technical operations, and advanced manufacturing. This investment will boost the local economy and contribute to Queensland’s innovation landscape.

Located in one of Australia’s most rapidly developing areas, the Moreton Bay Central Innovation Precinct will house not only PsiQuantum’s facility but also a TAFE Centre of Excellence and the Moreton Bay campus of the University of Sunshine Coast. This partnership will create educational pathways for students and professionals seeking careers in quantum and advanced manufacturing technologies.

Mayor Flannery said, “This project is exactly the kind of investment we want to attract to Moreton Bay. The technology being developed here will have a global impact while providing numerous local economic benefits.”

Professor Helen Bartlett, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sunshine Coast, noted that the campus was created with collaboration in mind. “It’s exciting to see this innovative ecosystem taking shape in Moreton Bay, especially with PsiQuantum breaking ground today.”

This announcement follows the recent opening of PsiQuantum’s Test and Validation Lab at Griffith University in Brisbane, designed for testing advanced quantum components crucial for the Moreton Bay project.
