Dharma Productions and Prithviraj Productions are teaming up to bring a new film, Odiyan: The Age of Illusion, to the big screen. This epic film draws inspiration from the folklore and cultural heritage of 19th-century Kerala. The project is produced by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, and Supriya Menon, and directed by Rahul Sadasivan, known for his notable works Bhoothakaalam, Bramayugam, and Diés Irae. This marks a significant milestone as it is Dharma Productions’ first venture into Malayalam cinema, a significant step for the esteemed production house.
At the heart of the story is a fierce shape-shifter from Kerala’s legends, whose wrath affects a strong matriarchal family. This conflict brings forth a gripping battle between reality and illusion, filled with myth and tension. Director Rahul Sadasivan, celebrated for his unique storytelling, views this as his most ambitious project to date.
Karan Johar, expressing his excitement about the project, said, “I have always admired Malayalam cinema for its craftsmanship and the trust filmmakers have in their audience. When we came across this captivating story, combined with Rahul’s vision and Prithviraj’s involvement, it felt like the perfect opportunity. Odiyan: The Age of Illusion deserves a grand platform, and I’m thrilled we can provide that.”
Apoorva Mehta, CEO of Dharma Productions, shared his thoughts on the collaboration: “Malayalam cinema embodies everything we value in storytelling. It’s fearless, culturally deep, and truly connects with its audience. Expanding into Malayalam cinema feels like a natural progression for us, as the industry is filled with talent and powerful narratives. Working with Prithviraj Productions and Rahul Sadasivan on this project is a significant moment for us.”
Prithviraj Sukumaran, both actor and producer with Prithviraj Productions, highlighted the importance of the myth of Odiyan, saying, “This tale is a vital part of Kerala’s identity, passed down through generations. It’s important to me to present this story in a way that honors its roots. Partnering with Dharma Productions combines our shared vision, and I’m excited to see this come to life.”
Supriya Menon, from Prithviraj Productions, expressed eagerness for this collaboration: “We are dedicated to enriching Malayalam cinema and are excited to welcome Dharma Productions into this landscape. Together, we hope to create exceptional cinema that resonates with our audience.”
Rahul Sadasivan added, “Folklore has always been a source of intrigue and fear, existing in that space between memory and imagination. With Odiyan: The Age of Illusion, I aim to breathe life into one of Kerala’s beloved legends while maintaining a focus on atmosphere and emotion. This project gives me the chance to explore larger themes while remaining true to my interests, and I am excited to team up with Dharma Productions and Prithviraj Productions.”
Odiyan: The Age of Illusion will be hitting cinemas soon.
