Excitement Grows for NYC World Cup Jerseys
On Friday, eager fans lined up early outside the official City Store in Manhattan to grab the newly released World Cup jerseys, which quickly sold out. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that more jerseys will be coming soon after the initial release drew massive crowds and led to high resale prices.
Many fans arrived as early as 1 a.m. to secure a jersey for the announced sale, which started at 9 a.m. They sought a more affordable option compared to the official FIFA World Cup NY-NJ jersey, priced at $375. The city jerseys, which cost $50, are handmade by the local business Mazzi Sports in Bedford-Stuyvesant and designed by illustrator Arsh Raziuddin.
As the store opened, the line stretched around nearby courthouses and down Worth Street. Jacob Farner, Kevin Assistoris, and Rohan Chala, who arrived at 5:30 a.m. with camping chairs, were among the lucky few to snag jerseys. “I think it was well worth it,” Farner said. “The jerseys look great,” while Chala added, “We knew it was going to be hard to get, so we got here as early as we could.”
In response to the overwhelming demand, Mayor Mamdani confirmed plans for another release in the future but didn’t specify when that would be or how many jerseys would be available. He emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses and encouraged fans to wait for the next release rather than pay inflated resale prices.
After Friday’s sellout, some resellers have listed the jerseys for over $1,000 online, with eBay prices ranging from $475 to $1,200. Mamdani cautioned against purchasing overpriced jerseys and assured fans, “There are more jerseys coming out.”
Stay tuned for more updates on the next jersey release and keep supporting local craftsmanship!
