Three Instructors Face Charges After Tragic Death of Young Woman in Brazil
Authorities are investigating a heartbreaking incident where a 21-year-old woman tragically died during a rope-jumping event in Brazil. Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas fell from an abandoned bridge when instructors allegedly launched her without securing the necessary safety ropes.
The accident occurred about 90 miles northwest of São Paulo. Police investigator Andrea Levy shared that the instructors involved admitted that Rodrigues de Freitas was not connected to any safety equipment prior to the jump. “They can’t recall if they forgot to attach the ropes or who was responsible for the check, but it’s clear the ropes were never attached,” she stated.
Following the incident, the three instructors were arrested and now face potential charges of homicide under Brazil’s legal system, which considers the acceptance of risk in cases leading to death. As reported by local media, the instructors were charged on the scene.
Rodrigues de Freitas had asked to be launched in an “airplane style,” where two instructors lifted her above their shoulders as she stretched out her arms. Video footage shared online shows the moments leading to her fall, with the instructors appearing to wear their safety harnesses.
Authorities confirmed that Rodrigues de Freitas fell approximately 130 feet. She had purchased a guided hiking tour that included the rope jump from the bridge, known locally as the “Skeleton Bridge.”
The city of Limeira, where Rodrigues de Freitas was from, expressed condolences, stating, “At this moment of pain, the City stands with the family, friends, and loved ones.” Investigators noted that they will work closely with local authorities to fully understand what happened.
Rodrigues de Freitas was laid to rest shortly after the incident. Police are also looking into whether the instructors were authorized to conduct activities at the location and if proper checks were made to ensure safety ropes were in place. The instructors’ attorneys mentioned that the group had conducted many successful jumps before this tragic event, marking it as their only fatal incident.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities delve deeper into what went wrong during the jump.
