India Shuts Down Telegram Through Monday Over Student Exam Integrity Issues

India Blocks Telegram Amid Exam Cheating Scandal

A new youth protest movement called the Cockroach Janta Party has gained attention in India after the cancellation of important exams last month.

In a recent move, the Indian government has decided to block access to the Telegram messaging app until Monday. This decision includes disabling the editing feature for already posted messages. Officials claim that the app has been misused for cheating during national student exams, leading to incidents of “paper leaks.”

This restriction was announced on Tuesday and is based on a strong provision of the IT law, which allows the government to block online platforms to protect the country’s “sovereignty and integrity.” However, some activists argue that this measure limits free speech. The government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, insists that their actions are both lawful and in the public interest.

The issue began when the government cancelled the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), a major entrance exam for medical schools, due to leaked questions. This prompted widespread protests by students across India, inspiring the Cockroach Janta Party to call for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

To address the cheating problems, a new NEET exam is now scheduled for Sunday, June 21, 2026. The Ministry of Education’s National Testing Agency stated that the Telegram restrictions are necessary to combat organized cheating efforts that have been reported ahead of the re-examination.

Despite being the largest market for Telegram downloads, India sees WhatsApp as the leading messaging app. Officials expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to users but emphasized that previous efforts to remove offending content from Telegram were ineffective, making this action a measure of “last resort.”
