FIFA World Cup 2026: Neymar to Miss Brazil vs. Morocco, Ancelotti Confirms Progress on Recovery

Brazil is gearing up for their opening match in the FIFA World Cup 2026, but they will have to do so without their star player, Neymar. Head coach Carlo Ancelotti confirmed that Neymar, who holds the record for being Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer, will not be available for the Group C game against Morocco.

The match will take place at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Saturday. Neymar is currently sidelined due to a calf injury that he sustained in mid-May. Although Ancelotti stated that Neymar is making good progress in his recovery, his return to international play will have to wait.

“Neymar is putting in a lot of effort to get back as soon as he can,” said Ancelotti in a press conference ahead of the game.

Ancelotti also highlighted that Neymar’s influence goes beyond just his skills on the field. “We selected him not only for his undeniable talent but also for the leadership he brings to our younger players,” he explained.

Neymar has not represented Brazil since 2023 and fans have been eagerly awaiting his return to the pitch.

### Is Neymar Injured?

Yes, Neymar is currently recovering from that calf injury he suffered. The 34-year-old player was named in Brazil’s World Cup squad despite some concerns about his fitness. Unfortunately, the timing of his recovery hasn’t allowed him to participate in the Morocco match.

While Brazil is considered one of the favorites for the tournament, losing Neymar is a significant setback due to his experience and status. He has scored eight goals across four previous World Cups and remains Brazil’s leading scorer.

### When Will Neymar Play in FIFA World Cup 2026?

Ancelotti shared an optimistic update regarding Neymar’s condition, indicating that he is expected to start training next week. This could mean he might be ready for Brazil’s second Group C match against Haiti on June 19. However, the coaching staff is likely to be cautious and avoid rushing him back to action.

Brazil’s last group-stage game will be against Scotland, led by Andy Robertson, on June 24. As the tournament is just beginning, Ancelotti and the team remain hopeful that Neymar’s World Cup experience is just temporarily on hold, not completely out of reach.
