The FIFA World Cup, the most celebrated sports event globally, kicked off in Mexico on Thursday. The host nation faced South Africa in the opening match, while fans are eagerly awaiting the United States’ first game against Paraguay. Interestingly, despite the U.S. co-hosting the tournament with Mexico and Canada, President Donald Trump will not be present at the event.

Trump is known for his love of sports and has made appearances at many significant events during his presidency, including a recent NBA Finals game in New York. However, he will miss this important game. Andrew Giuliani, head of the World Cup task force, confirmed that the President’s busy schedule is the reason for his absence.

“He’s not going to attend the opening game,” Giuliani shared with TalkSport. “His schedule is tight, but he will be involved throughout the World Cup.”

Later this weekend, Trump is expected to return to Washington, D.C. for the UFC Freedom 250 event at the White House, which also coincides with Flag Day and his 80th birthday.

A longtime supporter of the UFC, Trump has referred to it as “the greatest show on Earth” and has even compared its signature structure, which will be set up on the White House lawn, to the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

While the President may miss the opening game, Giuliani emphasized that Trump will stay engaged with the tournament as it unfolds in the three host countries.

On the field, the United States will begin their World Cup journey against Paraguay at the Los Angeles Stadium on Friday. Coach Mauricio Pochettino’s team faces the added pressure of being one of the host nations.

Although they are seen as favorites, Pochettino warned his players not to underestimate Paraguay, acknowledging them as one of the strong teams in South American football. Paraguay comes into the match in good form, having secured impressive wins against Argentina and Brazil during the qualifying rounds.

The United States, on the other hand, is encouraged by their recent form, including a close 3-2 victory over Senegal in a friendly match before the tournament. Pochettino has stated that his squad is ready physically, tactically, and mentally for the challenges ahead.
