Tensions Rise as US Strikes Oil Tanker with Indian Crew

On Wednesday, India summoned the top US diplomat in New Delhi after an American military operation targeted a commercial oil tanker carrying 24 Indian crew members off the coast of Oman. This marked a significant diplomatic clash between India and the US amid rising tensions due to the ongoing conflict in Iran.

The tanker, known as MT Settebello, was struck near the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global maritime trade. According to US military officials, the vessel was transporting Iranian oil and was allegedly trying to bypass a naval blockade enforced around Iran during the escalating regional conflict.

Tanker Ignored Warnings

The US reported that the Palau-flagged tanker had continued its journey despite several warnings to halt. Military officials asserted that the attack aimed to disable the ship, specifically targeting its engine room using precision munitions. They emphasized that the crew had been alerted before the strike and efforts were made to keep casualties low.

This incident marks the eighth time US forces have disabled merchant vessels in the Iranian waters since the blockade was put in place.

Indian Crew Affected

Out of the 24 Indian sailors aboard, 21 were successfully rescued through a coordinated effort involving Omani authorities and other maritime agencies. Sadly, three Indian sailors are still missing.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs acknowledged the situation concerning the missing crew but did not directly criticize the US in its official statement. However, India expressed its concerns by calling in Jason Meeks, the US charge d’affaires, since Ambassador Sergio Gor was reportedly out of the country.

The situation continues to develop as both nations navigate the complexities of international relations in a tense regional context.
