Nepal Aims for Stronger Ties with India, No Past Grudges
Nepal’s Foreign Minister, Shisir Khanal, made it clear that his country holds no past grudges against India during his recent meeting with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. This meeting comes amid ongoing discussions about improving Nepal-India relations, which have faced challenges over border disputes.
Jaishankar welcomed Khanal and emphasized the importance of collaboration, highlighting the potential for significant improvements in the friendship between the two nations. Both ministers chose not to dwell on contentious border issues, instead focusing on constructive discussions about trade, economic cooperation, cross-border connectivity, energy partnerships, and cultural ties.
Though the border dispute was not officially on the table, sources indicate that the two sides did touch on ongoing joint surveys and agreed to hold a meeting on border management soon, aiming to resolve issues through mutual understanding.
Khanal’s visit to India marks the first by a minister from either nation since the new government in Nepal took office in March, led by Balendra Shah. The minister expressed a desire to evolve the historical bond between India and Nepal into a modern and development-focused partnership. He extended his gratitude to India for supplying essential resources, like fuel and fertilizer, during recent global crises.
This diplomatic visit follows a recent trip by Nepali politician Rabi Lamichhane to India, which has helped stabilize relations after tensions flared last month regarding territorial claims connected to the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.
Khanal expressed optimism for productive and transparent discussions, hoping to lay the groundwork for future high-level visits that could signify a new chapter in the relationship between the two countries. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has previously extended an invitation for Shah to visit India.
Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s commitment to work alongside Nepal for the benefit of both nations and highlighted the potential for partnership in various fields, including health, education, and renewable energy.
Following their discussions, Jaishankar virtually handed over projects aimed at rebuilding health facilities and cultural sites affected by a major earthquake in 2015. The two ministers also announced a new initiative to facilitate personal remittances across borders and collaborated on a digital infrastructure project for language translation in Nepal.
With ongoing cooperation in trade, investment, and energy, there is a new opportunity to explore growth in emerging sectors like startups and technology. India views Nepal as a key partner and has welcomed the recent legal framework agreement focusing on cross-border crime, which aims to enhance the effectiveness of law enforcement for both nations.
In summary, this visit signals a hopeful look towards strengthening the ties between India and Nepal, with both countries eager to focus on collaboration and mutual growth.
