Experts Question Health Claims Surrounding Alkaline Water

The Rising Trend of Alkaline Water: Is It Worth the Hype?

Alkaline water has become a popular choice among health enthusiasts and celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Mark Wahlberg, and Jennifer Aniston. However, many are left wondering if it really offers genuine health benefits. Experts remain cautious, stating that scientific evidence is still unclear.

Alkaline water is often bottled with added minerals such as calcium and magnesium, which help increase its pH level. Regular water usually has a neutral pH of 7, while alkaline water has a pH higher than 7. Some claim that drinking alkaline water can neutralize acidity in the body.

There are assertions that alkaline water can help with various health issues, including conditions like cancer and stroke. Additionally, some studies suggest that it may aid in slowing bone loss, likely due to its calcium content. Notably, combining alkaline water with a plant-based Mediterranean diet could provide relief from acid reflux symptoms.

However, the Mayo Clinic emphasizes that more research is needed to validate these claims and assess their long-term effects. Howard E. LeWine, a medical editor at Harvard Health, mentions that while some benefits could exist, they are likely short-lived.

LeWine explains that since stomach fluid is very acidic, the pH difference caused by drinking alkaline water is negligible once it reaches the stomach. This means that any potential pH change would be temporary. For individuals suffering from heartburn, alkaline water may provide quick relief, but other treatments like antacids are generally more effective.

Experts caution that drinking alkaline water could pose risks, especially for individuals on medications that suppress stomach acid production. High levels of potassium, known as hyperkalemia, can occur if the water’s pH exceeds 9.8, raising health concerns, particularly for those with kidney issues.

Nutritionist Robin DeCicco states that there is no solid proof that alkaline water offers significant health benefits in the long run. She suggests that the best way to reduce acidity in the body involves fundamental healthy habits, like consuming whole foods and avoiding excess sugar and processed items.

For anyone grappling with acid reflux, consulting a healthcare professional is recommended. Simple changes, such as eating regularly, avoiding lying down post-meals, and steering clear of highly acidic foods, can often provide better relief.

In summary, while alkaline water is trendy, experts advise that a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle are the most effective methods for maintaining good health and minimizing acidity in the body.
