Wilkinson Takes the Helm of Wales Women’s Football Team
In February 2024, Wales welcomed a new leader for their women’s football team as Wilkinson stepped in following the unexpected resignation of Gemma Grainger. With a background as a former Canada international, Wilkinson quickly made her mark by leading Wales to Euro 2025, marking the first time the country will compete in a major women’s tournament.
Now, Wales is eyeing their chance to participate in the Women’s World Cup for the first time, although the path ahead is challenging. The team faces the possibility of up to three play-off rounds after the group stage wraps up next month.
In the wake of Wilkinson’s contract extension, former captain and coach Kath Morgan highlighted that her success will largely be evaluated based on whether the team qualifies for tournaments. However, Wilkinson sees things differently.
While she recognizes that reaching additional major championships is a significant goal, she believes success should not be solely defined by this. “We’ve set ambitious goals for ourselves as a team,” she stated. “But how do we measure success and failure?”
Wilkinson emphasized the importance of creating a strong foundation for the future of the team. She wants to ensure that when her time with the program is over, it fosters a healthy environment where the team boasts depth and versatility in every position. “If we focus on building that, qualifying for major tournaments will follow,” she concluded.
