Samsung has shared that starting September 30, 2026, its Gallery app will no longer connect directly with OneDrive. This means that Galaxy users who previously enjoyed backing up their photos and videos to Microsoft’s cloud will need to switch to the standalone OneDrive app.
After the cut-off date, new users won’t be able to link the Gallery app with OneDrive, and existing users must adjust their settings to keep their backups. Microsoft recommends that users update their camera roll backup settings directly within the OneDrive app to ensure their photos and videos continue to be automatically stored. This change means users may have to allow OneDrive more permissions than before, making the process a bit more complex.
Microsoft noted that not many Samsung users were taking advantage of the Gallery-OneDrive sync feature. By moving photo backup to its own app, Microsoft aims to make things simpler and lessen the dependence on specific manufacturers’ integrations. For Samsung, this decision allows them to streamline their Gallery app, centering on essential photo management without the need for third-party services.
With this change, Samsung Galaxy users might start looking at other options like Google Photos, which is well-integrated into Android devices, or Amazon Photos. Though OneDrive is still appealing to Microsoft 365 subscribers with its 1TB storage plan starting at just $1.99 per month, its focus is becoming more on productivity rather than personal photo management.
Both Samsung and Microsoft are urging users to update their Gallery backups before the September 2026 deadline. Changing settings in the OneDrive app will help maintain backup continuity.
