India and Cyprus Strengthen Partnership with New Agreements
NEW DELHI: India and Cyprus have elevated their relationship to a strategic partnership, marking a key step in their collaboration. During a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides, the two nations launched a framework for defense cooperation and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create a joint working group focused on counterterrorism.
Prime Minister Modi emphasized that the relationship is built on shared values such as democracy and the rule of law, stating India’s commitment to supporting Cyprus’s sovereignty and territorial integrity amid challenges faced from Turkey. “We respect the sovereignty of all nations, and India will continue to uphold these principles,” Modi remarked, identifying Cyprus as a vital investment link between India and Europe.
Cyprus is one of India’s top investors, and both leaders expressed a desire to double this investment within the next five years, especially with the anticipated benefits from the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA). “This partnership will enhance trade opportunities, particularly in infrastructure, energy, and agriculture, while also boosting investments in India’s growing maritime sector,” said Modi.
The discussions also covered defense, security, and cooperation in cybersecurity. Modi noted the increased military exchanges between the two countries and outlined plans for enhanced collaboration in maritime security and counter-terrorism efforts.
Recognizing the presence of many Indian students and professionals in Cyprus, both nations agreed to finalize a migration and mobility partnership and a social security agreement soon.
During the talks, Modi addressed global issues such as the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East, emphasizing the importance of peace and stability. The leaders stressed the need for reform in global institutions to tackle emerging global challenges and reiterated their unity against terrorism, condemning cross-border terrorism without any double standards.
The joint statement reflected Cyprus’s support for India’s bid for a permanent seat in a reformed United Nations Security Council. Both leaders highlighted the transformative potential of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, aiming to bolster trade and connectivity while fostering stability in the Eastern Mediterranean and beyond.
They also discussed creating a Bilateral Connectivity Dialogue to further enhance cooperation and engagement between India and Cyprus.
