England Announces 26-Man Squad for 2026 FIFA World Cup
England’s head coach, Thomas Tuchel, has revealed his 26-man squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to take place in North America this summer. Notably, several prominent players will miss out, including Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who will remain at home during the tournament.
England will kick off their World Cup journey against Croatia in Dallas on June 17. They will also face Ghana on June 23 and Panama on June 27 as part of Group L.
This is Tuchel’s first significant tournament squad since taking over as England’s manager, and it has already generated discussions due to some surprising exclusions. Along with Foden, Palmer, and Alexander-Arnold, other notable absentees include Harry Maguire, Morgan Gibbs-White, Luke Shaw, Adam Wharton, and James Garner.
Foden and Palmer’s absence stands out as they struggled during their domestic seasons with Manchester City and Chelsea, respectively. With strong competition in the attacking midfield and wide areas, Tuchel has chosen a different approach for this squad.
The decision to leave out Alexander-Arnold is also significant. The right-back from Real Madrid hasn’t played often for England since last summer, leading Tuchel to decide against including him in the World Cup roster.
Maguire’s exclusion received considerable attention, particularly after he expressed feeling “shocked and gutted” about the news on social media. Reports about the squad leaked before the official announcement, leaving many fans already speculating about the final selection.
A surprising inclusion is Ivan Toney, who has had limited appearances under Tuchel and played just two minutes for England since the coaching change. However, his strong scoring record in Saudi Arabia seems to have influenced Tuchel’s decision to bring him back.
Ollie Watkins has also made his way back into the squad following a strong finish to the season with Aston Villa. He is expected to challenge Toney for the backup striker position behind captain Harry Kane.
Kane will again lead the attack, as the team aims for its first World Cup title since 1966. Tuchel is also placing his trust in a young and lively midfield, featuring players like Declan Rice, Kobbie Mainoo, Morgan Rogers, and Elliot Anderson, all of whom have performed well at the club level this season.
However, there are some fitness concerns with certain players. Tino Livramento was included despite missing a month due to a thigh injury, and Djed Spence was also selected even after reports of a broken jaw.
