Harsh Chhaya Discusses Moving On After Divorce from Shefali Shah

In a recent interview, Indian actor Harsh Chhaya opened up about his experience after separating from actress Shefali Shah. The couple, who were together for six years, ended their marriage in 2000. Harsh shared that he began to notice problems in their relationship about eight to nine months before they officially split.

“It’s a personal journey for everyone,” Harsh said. “In our case, I could see that things were coming to a standstill.” This awareness helped him prepare for their separation, as he noted that when Shefali finally said she couldn’t stay with him anymore, he was already mentally ready for it.

Although the end of his marriage was hard, Harsh used this difficult time to focus on his work. “Even though I knew what was happening, I didn’t let it drag me down. I threw myself into my work and took care of myself,” he explained.

He admitted that the time after their separation was filled with many emotions, such as anger and contemplation. To cope, he went out on dates and talked to friends, recognizing that it was important to stay sane during such a tough period. “You have to accept the discomfort and not pretend to be strong all the time,” he advised.

Harsh also shared his thoughts on divorce, arguing that the stigma often attached to it is unnecessary. “Divorce isn’t a big deal; it’s part of life,” he stated. He and Shefali acted quickly to formalize their separation, clarifying their status with the court just six months after parting ways.

The two first met while working together on the TV show “Hasratein” and married in 1994. After their separation, Shefali later married filmmaker Vipul Amrutlal Shah and became a mother to two sons. Harsh, on the other hand, found new love with actress Suneeta Sengupta in 2003.

Reflecting on their marriage, Harsh said, “You can’t expect two people to be together all the time. I can’t live with my own twin for an entire year.” He believes that if a relationship needs to end, it’s often better to deal with it sooner rather than later. Looking back, Harsh sees his separation from Shefali as a closed chapter in his life.

Both actors have described their split as a critical yet necessary change in their lives, allowing them to grow individually. Shefali acknowledged the effort she put into their marriage but recognized that sometimes, ending a relationship is the healthiest decision for everyone involved.
