Intense IPL 2026 Playoff Race Heats Up

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have added more excitement to the IPL 2026 playoff contest by beating Chennai Super Kings by five wickets on May 18 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. This win also secured a playoff spot for the Gujarat Titans.

In a previous match, Royal Challengers Bengaluru earned their playoff chance after defeating Punjab Kings by 23 runs in Dharamsala. Now, SRH, RCB, and GT are confirmed for the playoffs, leaving just one slot still available.

Teams vying for the last playoff position include Punjab Kings, Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, and Kolkata Knight Riders. With seven matches left in the league stage, competition is expected to intensify.

Playoff Qualification Scenarios

Punjab Kings: Currently, Punjab Kings find themselves in a challenging situation. Even if they win their last league match, finishing with 15 points, they may not qualify since Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals could surpass them. They could still qualify with 13 points, but this would require both Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings to lose all their remaining matches.

Rajasthan Royals: Rajasthan Royals have control over their own fate. If they win both of their upcoming matches, they secure a playoff spot. However, if they win one and lose one, they risk falling behind other teams like KKR and Punjab Kings. Losing both matches would eliminate them from contention entirely.

Chennai Super Kings: Chennai Super Kings must win their final match to remain in the playoff hunt. Yet, victory does not guarantee qualification, as teams like Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders could still qualify with more points.

Delhi Capitals: Similar to CSK, Delhi Capitals also need a win in their last match to stay afloat. Their net run rate is concerning, making it crucial for them to secure a victory.

Kolkata Knight Riders: KKR has a chance to finish with 15 points by winning both of their remaining matches, but that may not be enough for qualification. They could qualify with 13 points if other teams falter, but they need to avoid losing both remaining matches to stay in the race.

The upcoming weeks will bear witness to an exciting end to the IPL 2026 league stage, as teams battle for those critical playoff spots.
