Tragic Incident at Dubare Elephant Camp: Woman Killed in Clash
A woman lost her life after being crushed during a confrontation between two trained elephants at the Dubare camp in Karnataka’s Kodagu district. Onlookers reported that one of the elephants fell on her after losing its balance.
The unfortunate event took place while 33-year-old Tulasi, a tourist from Tamil Nadu, was observing the elephants being bathed near the river. As the elephants, named Kanjan and Marthanda, began fighting, the situation quickly escalated. Despite efforts from the mahouts to control the elephants, Kanjan charged at Marthanda, causing the latter to topple over. Tragically, Tulasi was caught underneath and did not survive. Fortunately, her husband and child, who were nearby, managed to escape without any injuries.
Investigation Ordered by Karnataka Minister
Eshwar Khandre, Karnataka’s Minister for Forest, Ecology, and Environment, expressed his sorrow over the incident and has called for a thorough investigation. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that visitors maintain a safe distance from wildlife.
Khandre described the event as “deeply shocking” and offered condolences to Tulasi’s family. He stated that even trained elephants can behave unpredictably, making it challenging to anticipate how they might react in various situations. To enhance safety, he instructed officials to prohibit activities such as allowing tourists to touch the elephants, take photos too closely, or feed them snacks.
Recent Wild Animal Attacks in the Region
This incident follows reports of two fatalities in Assam’s Nagaon district due to separate wild elephant attacks earlier this year, as well as another deadly encounter in Karnataka where a coffee grower was killed. Local residents recounted that aggressive behavior often follows attempts to drive elephants away when they venture into populated areas.
The authorities are now taking steps to increase safety measures and prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
