Teenage Batting Star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Gains Support for National Team Call-Up
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri is advocating for young batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to join the senior national cricket team. Following impressive performances in the IPL, Shastri believes the selectors should consider fast-tracking the 15-year-old talent into India’s T20 setup. He suggests that the upcoming tour of Ireland could be a great opportunity for Sooryavanshi to make his debut.
Sooryavanshi, who plays as an opener for the Rajasthan Royals, has captured attention this IPL season with his bold batting style and high strike rate. Shastri highlighted this excitement during a recent episode of The ICC Review, stating, “The door would be three-fourths open.” He emphasized that the T20 format is perfect for bringing young players into the team, and Sooryavanshi stands out among them.
Addressing concerns about the teenager’s age, Shastri pointed out that Sooryavanshi’s fearless approach against seasoned bowlers makes him a strong candidate for immediate selection. “People may wonder about his age, but it’s clear to me that he handles bowlers much older than him without fear,” Shastri said. With tours like Ireland coming up, he is keen to see Sooryavanshi in action.
Rapid Rise in the Cricketing World
Sooryavanshi’s journey has been impressive, especially after his standout performance in the ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup this year. He has successfully transitioned into the IPL, gathering 440 runs in just 11 innings, boasting an incredible strike rate of 236.56. Notably, he scored a breathtaking century in just 36 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad and has hit 40 sixes, the most by any player this season.
Shastri’s endorsement is gaining momentum as Sooryavanshi received his first call-up to the India A team on May 14, just after Shastri’s public support for him. This summer, he will tour Sri Lanka for a tri-series that includes Afghanistan. The selectors will be closely watching his performance, especially with India’s upcoming white-ball matches on the horizon.
If he continues to excel on the international stage, Sooryavanshi could soon make history as India’s youngest-ever international player.
