Gujarat Titans Captain Shubman Gill Critiques Team’s Fielding After Loss

In a disappointing match, Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill did not hold back in criticizing his team’s fielding after a 29-run defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on Saturday. Gujarat’s poor fielding was evident as they let four catches slip away, leading Gill to conclude that his team “did not deserve to win” even after a commendable batting effort in their chase.

Moving forward, Gill tried to stay positive, suggesting that it’s better to learn from such mistakes now rather than later during the playoffs. “We set a certain standard, and when we drop three easy catches, we didn’t deserve to win this one. It’s better to have a game like this now than in the Qualifiers,” he explained after the match.

Despite the tough loss, Gill managed a smile while recalling the fielding blunders that allowed KKR to post a hefty total of 247 for 2, too much for Gujarat to chase down, as they ended with 218 runs.

The Titans’ fielding issues emerged early when they missed a couple of chances to dismiss Finn Allen, who took advantage of their mistakes, scoring a remarkable 93 runs off just 35 balls, featuring 10 sixes and four fours.

Young batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Cameron Green also capitalized on dropped catches. Raghuvanshi scored 82 off 44 balls, and Green added an impressive unbeaten 52 off 28 deliveries. Their contributions helped KKR achieve one of their highest scores this season, ending Gujarat’s five-match winning streak.

Gill believed the pitch at Eden Gardens was fair, suggesting that had they fielded better, they would have remained more competitive. “Looking at the pitch, a score of 200-210 was achievable. We batted well but dropped too many catches. The pitch was fine; we just need to improve our fielding,” he stated.

Gujarat’s assistant coach Parthiv Patel also shared Gill’s sentiments, emphasizing that catching was the key factor that swayed the game. “Catching made a huge difference. In high-scoring matches against great batters, you rarely get chances. We needed to seize those opportunities, and I think that was the turning point,” Patel said post-match.

Despite the setback, the Gujarat Titans are still well positioned for the playoffs. However, Saturday’s match served as a timely warning that small fielding errors can have significant consequences as the competition intensifies.

Gill remains hopeful that this was their worst fielding day of the season, ideally occurring before the pressure builds in the playoff rounds.
