Meta Withdraws AI Image Generation Feature After Backlash
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has decided to retract a controversial feature that allowed users to create personalized images from public Instagram accounts. The decision comes after widespread criticism from privacy advocates and industry representatives.
The feature, known as Muse Image, was part of Meta’s effort to enhance social interactions using artificial intelligence. It allowed users to tag public Instagram accounts, which the AI would then use to generate new images or altered versions of those from the tagged profiles. However, many were alarmed by the way the feature operated.
A Meta spokesperson stated that the aim was to offer a creative tool while allowing users to control how their public content was used. However, the response revealed that the feature did not resonate well with the audience. “We’ve heard the feedback that this feature missed the mark, so it’s no longer available,” the spokesperson said.
The backlash was particularly heated because Meta had an “opt-out” policy, meaning that public account holders over 18 were automatically included unless they opted out themselves. This policy led to concerns that individuals, including regular users and celebrities, could have their images used by strangers without their explicit consent.
The Creative Artists Agency (CAA), representing major stars such as Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, voiced strong objections to the tool. They emphasized that no one’s name, image, or work should be used without clear permission, stressing the importance of respecting creators’ rights.
Despite this setback, Meta has plans to introduce more generative AI features across other platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and Messenger in the future.
