CJI Clarifies Controversial Remarks on Unemployment

On Saturday, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant addressed a misunderstanding regarding his statements made during a recent Supreme Court hearing. He expressed concern that parts of the media had misinterpreted his comments, particularly those describing certain unemployed youth as “cockroaches.” The CJI clarified that his criticism was aimed solely at individuals using fake or bogus degrees to enter professional fields.

“I am saddened to see how my remarks have been taken out of context,” he stated. “My focus was on those exploiting the system to enter professions like the legal field, media, and social activism without legitimate qualifications.” He emphasized that these individuals act like “parasites” within society.

CJI Kant further added, “It is unfounded to claim that I criticized the youth of our nation. I am proud of India’s young people, who inspire me daily. I believe they are the backbone of a prosperous future for our country.”

His remarks followed a Supreme Court session where the bench, including Justice Joymalya Bagchi, responded critically to a lawyer who had filed a petition regarding senior advocate status. The CJI had labeled the petition as “frivolous,” leading to his earlier comments about unemployed youth.

“Many young individuals facing employment challenges appear in various roles like media and activists, often attacking the system,” he remarked, warning attorneys against collaborating with those he identified as societal “parasites.”

The bench ultimately rejected the petition, telling the lawyer that despite many aspiring for senior status, he did not meet the necessary criteria. When the petitioner requested to withdraw his plea, the bench allowed it.
