Kejriwal Criticizes Congress Ahead of Delhi Assembly Elections
On December 1, 2024, former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal took shots at the Congress party during a public meeting at Kalkaji. His comments came as the Delhi assembly elections approach, likely scheduled for February.
Kejriwal, who leads the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), recalled that during Congress’s time in power, Delhi faced extensive power cuts lasting between eight to ten hours. He contrasted that with the current situation where residents no longer rely heavily on inverters and generators for electricity. “Ten years ago, people made me chief minister. You asked me to improve education facilities, and I did that. But when Congress was in charge, power cuts were a regular issue,” he stated.
At the event, Kejriwal was joined by Atishi, the current MLA for Kalkaji, who succeeded him as chief minister after his unexpected resignation in September 2024, following a legal ruling that restricted him from official duties.
Kejriwal explained his resignation, saying he wanted to earn a “certificate of honesty” from the public before taking any government position ahead of the elections. Since coming into power in December 2013 with outside support from Congress, Kejriwal has led the AAP to triumph over Congress in Punjab and expand its influence in other regions.
While AAP has faced criticism from Congress for potentially splitting anti-BJP votes, the party recently allied with other opposition groups, forming the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) to compete against the Bharatiya Janata Party in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The upcoming elections in Delhi promise to be a crucial test for both parties as they navigate their strategies and past histories.
