A recent post on Reddit by a software engineer is raising alarms about potential layoffs in the tech industry. The user expressed deep concern for a close friend who is facing job loss, despite working tirelessly for his company. This prompted the engineer to warn others against pursuing a career in software engineering.

In his post, he shared, “My very close friend is about to get laid off. He worked day and night, and now this company needs to change!” He went on to urge people not to enter the field, criticizing the stressful work culture many engineers face today.

The engineer noted that workers in tech are no longer seen with the same level of respect as in the past. Many are expected to constantly prove their value while working under immense pressure. He remarked, “Companies are treating software engineers like laborers. There’s hardly any real engineering involved anymore; we’re just managing tasks.”

He also pointed out that while more people are entering the industry, job openings are declining. He cautioned students against the traditional push for top colleges or coding careers, stating, “The demand for engineers is very low. You’ll need a lot of luck to get hired in this tough competition.”

The Reddit user questioned whether having technical skills was even relevant anymore, asking, “With so many candidates, think logically. Does your skill matter or is it just luck?”

Despite holding a significant job at a high-paying tech company since graduating in 2023, he admitted to feeling anxious about layoffs. He shared, “Even with my salary over ₹35 lakh, I feel like I could be laid off any time if my performance dips.”

He ended his post with a strong warning for younger generations: “Don’t mess up your career by becoming a software engineer; you might need to look for other options.”

As his post gained traction online, reactions have been mixed. Some commented with concern, while others defended the field, saying there are opportunities beyond coding if one has the right skills and networking connections.

This story highlights the anxiety many in the tech industry are currently facing, reminding everyone to consider their career choices carefully.
