India Advocates for Inclusive Migration Framework at UN Assembly
New York: India is working towards creating a fair and compassionate migration system that addresses the challenges posed by illegal migration and human trafficking. This was highlighted by Union Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly.
“Migration is primarily about people — their dreams, resilience, and contributions,” Singh stated at the plenary session of the second International Migration Review Forum on Thursday. He emphasized the importance of building a future-oriented and inclusive framework, while also tackling issues like irregular migration and providing better social protections.
India approaches migration through a comprehensive and practical lens, aiming to protect migrants at every step of their journey while encouraging global cooperation. “With over 34 million members in one of the world’s largest and most vibrant diasporas, India shows how migration can significantly impact lives and communities,” Singh added.
The country has signed extensive agreements with 23 nations to ensure fair and ethical pathways for migration. “This is vital for achieving the safety and well-being of migrants,” he noted.
The minister pointed out various initiatives that India has launched, including utilizing digital technology to assist its citizens abroad. The country has bolstered consular assistance through resources like the ‘MADAD’ helpline and Migrant Resource Centres. Additionally, India’s Passport Seva portal makes it easier for citizens to access necessary services at home and abroad.
Since its establishment in 2009, the Indian Community Welfare Fund has been providing crucial support such as emergency aid and legal assistance to Indians overseas. Singh mentioned the importance of enhancing skill development programs and pre-departure training to better prepare migrants for their new environments, including information about their rights and cultural nuances.
He also referred to a recent report by the International Organization for Migration, identifying India to the United Arab Emirates and the United States as significant migration routes for 2024. India has consistently ranked as the leading country for remittances, receiving approximately USD 137.67 billion in 2024, a remarkable growth from USD 53.48 billion in 2010.
As India strives to create a more inclusive framework for migration, the focus remains on ensuring safety, fairness, and the well-being of migrants globally.
