UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer Announces Resignation

Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, announced his resignation on Monday after facing severe challenges within the Labour Party following significant local election losses. His departure comes amid growing unrest among party members and the resignation of several government ministers.

Starmer stated he would step down from his roles as Prime Minister and Labour leader, believing he could no longer bring unity to the party. However, he plans to stay in office until a successor is chosen.

“Every decision I’ve made has put the country first,” Starmer expressed outside 10 Downing Street. “I have spoken to His Majesty the King this morning to inform him of my decision.”

He acknowledged the rising concerns within his party, saying, “The question my party is asking now is whether I am the best person to lead us into the next general election. I have listened to their answers and accept them humbly.”

Starmer indicated he will remain in his position as a caretaker Prime Minister until Labour members elect a new leader. He has asked the National Executive Committee to establish a timeline for the leadership contest, with nominations opening on July 9 and completed by the summer recess. This plan aims for the new leader to be in place by September.

Adding to Starmer’s challenges, former U.S. President Donald Trump criticized him in a recent post, claiming he “failed badly” in immigration and energy policies while wishing him luck.

Starmer’s resignation follows Labour’s disappointing performance in local elections last month, where the party lost approximately 1,500 council seats and control of over 25 councils, significantly affected by gains from Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party and the Green Party’s rise in urban areas.

Starmer’s troubles intensified after a dispute with Trump regarding military actions in Iran earlier this year, where he faced backlash for his indecisiveness and perceived weak leadership. Polls indicated voters viewed him as “weak” and too reactive.

The crisis peaked when two ministers resigned publicly, urging for new leadership. Jess Phillips cited a lack of “gusto,” while Miatta Fahnbulleh called for an “orderly transition.”

Growing unrest among Labour MPs is notable, with more than 80 calling for Starmer’s resignation. Some party leaders continue to support him, emphasizing stability.

As the party looks ahead, attention is now on who will replace Starmer. Potential candidates include Wes Streeting, who is seen as a frontrunner from the centrist faction, and Andy Burnham, who has grassroots support. Angela Rayner, the Deputy Prime Minister, is also expected to play a key role in the succession process.
