Indian badminton player Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, part of the country’s successful doubles pair, recently opened up about the frustrations he faces regarding support for athletes in India. After India’s bronze medal win at the Thomas Cup, Satwik expressed his disappointment during an interview. He candidly shared that he feels alone in his pursuit of excellence, claiming, “I do not get support from my government… I am all alone in this.”
In the interview, which extended well beyond its planned 15 minutes, Satwik highlighted the limited support for sports in India and the reality faced by athletes who travel worldwide to represent their country. Despite their achievements, he pointed out that they often go unnoticed.
Satwik took to social media after returning from the Thomas Cup, where India had previously secured a bronze by defeating Chinese Taipei before being eliminated by France in the semifinals. In his Instagram story, he criticized the neglect of the Indian badminton team, noting that no representatives from the badminton association or the government welcomed them at the airport. “Back home now. As usual, no one knows what happened… and it seems like no one really cares,” he wrote.

Satwik, who along with partner Chirag Shetty has made history in badminton, lamented the lack of acknowledgment for their accomplishments. He shared that even at the airport, no one recognized them as members of the national badminton team. “Nobody knows we are the badminton team… and that lack of recognition makes your heart sink,” he stated.
Interestingly, Satwik revealed that they had to create and print their own jerseys for the tournament, emphasizing the insufficient support they receive as representatives of India. Their effort to design a Thomas Cup jersey themselves highlights the challenges they face.
“What I ask is so simple: cheer for us at team events and show that you care. We don’t want money; just a little recognition would mean a lot,” he said, expressing his frustration over the lack of support during both victories and defeats.

Satwik mentioned that the excitement surrounding their Thomas Cup win has faded, and the lack of ongoing support remains disheartening. “Four years after our Thomas Cup triumph, I still find myself explaining who I am at restaurants,” he said.
Reflecting on the potential impact of their 2022 win, Satwik compared it to India’s 1983 cricket World Cup victory, which transformed cricket into a major sport in the country. Yet, he feels that little has changed for badminton.
Satwik criticized the fleeting attention given to athletes, noting, “In a world of short attention spans, it’s easy to overlook someone representing the country at a global level.”
Future Aspirations
As he navigates his career, Satwik is concerned about being forgotten once he retires. With only a few years left at his peak, he fears that without recognition now, nobody will remember his contributions.
Expressing his frustration further, he noted how he often struggles to get a table at a restaurant, while celebrities and influencers receive preferential treatment. “Sometimes I think I should just focus on social media instead,” he mused, weighing the idea of leaving badminton for a more lucrative path in content creation.
