Cruise Ship Hantavirus Outbreak: What We Know

A serious hantavirus outbreak has been reported on the MV Hondius cruise ship, leading to the death of three passengers and the illness of multiple others. Dr. Zaid Fadul, a physician, revealed that the outbreak involves the Andes strain, which has a high mortality rate of about 40%. This strain is particularly concerning because, unlike most hantaviruses, it can sometimes spread from person to person, warranting significant attention from health officials.

Recently, a man from Switzerland who traveled aboard the Hondius has tested positive for the virus and has been placed in isolation. He developed symptoms after returning home, prompting immediate medical attention. His wife, who accompanied him, is currently self-isolating but has not shown any symptoms.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that the Andes strain can be transmitted through close contact, distinguishing it from typical hantavirus infections, which are usually tied to encounters with rodent droppings. South African health authorities have also identified this strain in two other passengers from the cruise.

The Hondius has been stranded off the coast of Cape Verde with nearly 150 individuals aboard. Authorities are working diligently to manage the situation, emphasizing that while the risk of spread is low, travelers should be monitored closely. The ship had left Argentina on April 1 and was set to explore the Southern Atlantic before the outbreak forced a change in its plans.

The captain and crew are coordinating with health agencies as they await guidance on how to proceed, with Spain offering to accept the vessel in the Canary Islands, despite concerns from local officials.

Health experts remind the public that while hantavirus infections can have severe symptoms, they are still relatively rare. Authorities continue to investigate the outbreak and assess the health of all passengers involved.
