North Carolina Mayor’s Wife Bitten by Copperhead Snake

In a recent incident, Robert Burns, the mayor of Monroe, North Carolina, shared a scary experience involving his wife, Lauren, who was bitten by a copperhead snake. The bite occurred near their home, prompting a rush to the emergency room on the night of April 30.

Burns took to social media to inform his community about the situation, stating, “Word has gotten out that my sweet wife was bitten by a large copperhead last night. When it happened, we rushed her to the ER.” Fortunately, Lauren’s vitals have stabilized, but she remains in severe pain, according to the mayor.

“We’re a busy family with a lot going on, but we truly appreciate your prayers and support,” he added, acknowledging the well-wishes they have received during this difficult time.

Copperhead snakes are known to be the most common venomous snakes in North Carolina, primarily residing in wooded or rural areas. Due to their wide presence, they are responsible for over 90% of snake bites in the state.

In a conversation with reporters, Burns mentioned that before the incident, Lauren was walking near a rope swing on their property while talking to her father. The mayor was outside grilling when he first heard her shout, “Babe, I think I got bit by a snake.” He quickly rushed to her side and discovered two puncture wounds on her ankle.

Lauren’s condition required several hours of monitoring at the hospital, where doctors consulted poison control as swelling spread up her leg. Although the bite was serious, the family chose not to use anti-venom after weighing the potential risks.

Burns reflects on the situation, saying, “I’ve seen her in pain before, but I’ve never seen her like this. She is in excruciating pain right now.” The couple’s daughter had been in the same area shortly before the incident, highlighting the need for caution.

Burns emphasized the importance of taking any snake bite seriously, urging people to be vigilant and cautious in areas where snakes may reside. He expressed gratitude for the support his family has received and remains hopeful for Lauren’s recovery at home.
