Novo Nordisk Reduces Prices for Wegovy and Ozempic

Novo Nordisk, a major pharmaceutical company, has announced a significant decrease in the list prices for its popular diabetes and weight-loss medications, Ozempic and Wegovy. This move aims to make these treatments more affordable for patients across the United States. Dr. Mahsa Tehrani, a board-certified rheumatologist, discussed this decision on the show ‘America Reports.’

While many users of GLP-1 medications report benefits like weight loss and improved diabetes management, some have also experienced gastrointestinal issues and other lesser-known side effects. One such side effect has been dubbed “Ozempic breath,” which is identified by a fishy odor in burps or bad breath. Dr. Neha Lalani, an endocrinologist in Texas, noted that this issue, while not officially listed as a side effect, is being discussed among patients.

Interestingly, changes in consumer habits have been noted due to the rise in these medications’ use. For instance, the CEO of Hershey reported that more customers are purchasing gum and mints to combat bad breath associated with GLP-1 treatments.

Currently, no scientific studies confirm that these medications cause bad breath, but many users are speaking out about their experiences on social media. Some describe their struggle to manage the odor, with comments ranging from embarrassment to frustration.

Dr. Sue Decotiis, a physician in New York City who specializes in weight loss, points out that bad breath can be caused by dehydration, reflux, or imbalances in gut bacteria. She emphasizes that patients taking GLP-1 medications should aim to drink about a gallon of water daily to stay hydrated and mitigate potential side effects.

For those dealing with persistent bad breath, Dr. Decotiis recommends probiotics and a diet rich in protein and fiber to help maintain a healthy gut. Along with professional advice, many users have suggested practical tips, such as increasing water intake and avoiding greasy or processed foods.

Patients experiencing ongoing bad breath or unique digestive issues while taking GLP-1 medications are encouraged to consult a healthcare professional for guidance. Novo Nordisk has been approached for further comments on this topic.
