Klaasen’s Focus Shifts as He Embraces a New Journey in Cricket
Heinrich Klaasen surprised many when he announced his retirement from international cricket, effective June 2025. Known as a talented T20 batsman, Klaasen played a significant role in helping South Africa reach the finals of the T20 World Cup 2024.
Since his retirement, Klaasen has been active in various cricket leagues worldwide and is currently making waves in the ongoing IPL 2026 season. His impressive performance has caught the attention of former player Kevin Pietersen, who suggested that Cricket South Africa should consider bringing Klaasen back for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
But what are Klaasen’s plans? In an exclusive interview with Sports Today, the new co-owner of the Rotterdam franchise in the European T20 Premier League (ETPL) confirmed that he isn’t looking to make a comeback to international play. Instead, he is focused on developing the sport.
Klaasen shared his excitement for the ETPL and emphasized the importance of getting the Rotterdam community involved. “Unfortunately, I’m not looking to return. I’m excited about this new chapter and growing the game of cricket. We aim to build a strong professional team and engage the local fans,” he said.
Klaasen’s IPL Success: What’s the Secret?
Currently, Klaasen ranks second in the race for the Orange Cap, having scored 414 runs in nine matches. While other players like Nicholas Pooran, who has also stepped away from international cricket, have struggled, Klaasen continues to excel.
When asked about the secret to his success, Klaasen mentioned it’s simply about belief. He pointed out his co-owner, Faf du Plessis, as an example of someone who has continued to shine in T20 leagues despite retiring from international play. “I don’t think there’s a secret. It’s all about having belief. Faf is like fine wine; the longer he plays, the better he gets,” Klaasen remarked.
He believes that to be successful, players need to take care of themselves and prepare adequately. “You can’t just stroll into these leagues; you need proper preparation. That’s what I focus on,” he explained.
Klaasen highlighted that coming into leagues like the IPL mentally fresh gives him an edge. “I make sure to prepare properly before the season starts, allowing me to hit the ground running when I join the league,” he added.
Looking ahead, SRH will play against KKR in Hyderabad on May 3.
