Rajasthan Royals Reflect on Recent Controversies Ahead of Key Match
Kumar Sangakkara, the team coach of Rajasthan Royals, has acknowledged that the franchise is facing a challenging moment of reflection due to two recent off-field incidents involving key team members. These controversies have drawn the attention of the IPL Governing Council and the BCCI just before their match against Delhi Capitals in Jaipur.
The latest issue occurred when stand-in captain Riyan Parag was filmed using an e-cigarette in the team dugout during a game against Punjab Kings. This footage quickly circulated on social media, resulting in a fine of 20% of his match fee for violating the IPL’s code of conduct. Fortunately for Parag, there was no suspension.
Just days earlier, Rajasthan’s team manager, Romi Bhinder, faced penalties after being caught using his phone in the dugout during a match, with young player Vaibhav Sooryavanshi sitting next to him. For this breach, the IPL imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh, but again opted not to issue a ban.
With scrutiny increasing over these repeated offenses, Sangakkara admitted that these incidents have not painted the franchise in a good light. He reassured that both issues have been dealt with internally and by the proper authorities.
A Reminder for the Team
“Such controversies do not benefit the team. I can only say that the BCCI and the franchise have addressed these matters,” Sangakkara stated before the match against Delhi Capitals. “This serves as a reminder for our players to uphold the team’s culture.”
The Royals are eager to shift the focus back to cricket as they prepare for a crucial home game. They are currently in the playoff race and need to avoid distractions at this critical point in the season.
Sangakkara also mentioned the importance of small but impactful contributions in their last match, highlighting how they can change the game’s momentum.
“It was the little innings that shifted the momentum for us,” he noted.
Looking ahead, Sangakkara expects the pitch in Jaipur to be favorable for cricket, as Rajasthan gears up for a competitive encounter against a Delhi team that is still trying to find its stride.
“It looks like another great pitch. We expect nothing but the best from Delhi Capitals,” he added.
For Rajasthan, the task is clear: to ensure their on-field performances dominate the conversation as the tournament reaches a crucial stage.
