Pietersen Urges South Africa to Convince Klaasen to Return from Retirement
Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has urged Cricket South Africa to reach out to Heinrich Klaasen, who recently retired from international cricket, and encourage him to come back. Pietersen believes that Klaasen’s impressive recent performances for Sunrisers Hyderabad could play a crucial role in helping South Africa win their first-ever ICC limited-overs World Cup, which will take place in 2027 on home soil.
Pietersen’s call to action follows Klaasen’s outstanding display in a match against Mumbai Indians on April 29, where he led his team to a remarkable victory. Despite South Africa’s rich cricketing history, they have yet to secure a men’s ODI World Cup title, with their last major win in limited-overs cricket dating back to 1998. The team reached the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup but fell short against India.
In a tweet, Pietersen emphasized the importance of Klaasen’s return. “South Africa has never won a cricket World Cup. The South African cricket board should be making a call to Heinrich Klaasen to see if he can rejoin international cricket and play a key role in their World Cup campaign,” he wrote. “With his current form, Klaasen could be the game-changer South Africa needs.”
Klaasen’s Position on a Comeback
Despite the appeal from Pietersen, Klaasen has already made it clear that he has no intention of returning to international cricket. He has been focusing on personal priorities and briefly considered coming back ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup but ultimately decided against it.
“It was a thought for about two weeks, but my family played a huge role in my decision not to return. My friends had a great time in the World Cup, and I did feel a bit of FOMO (fear of missing out) to come back,” Klaasen explained in a video shared by IPL. He mentioned that he spoke to Aiden Markram, who suggested that he might return if he was the captain, but after reflecting, Klaasen realized it wasn’t going to happen.
Even while enjoying a stellar season in the Indian Premier League, where he has been a standout player for SRH, Klaasen remains firm in his decision. In nine innings, he has racked up 414 runs with a striking rate of 157.41, putting him second in the race for the Orange Cap behind his teammate Abhishek Sharma. Klaasen’s next challenge will be against Kolkata Knight Riders on May 3 in Hyderabad.
