Mumbai Indians Struggle in IPL 2026: Owner’s Frustration on Display
The Mumbai Indians are facing tough times as they continue to struggle in the IPL 2026 season. After a disheartening loss to the Chennai Super Kings, team owner Akash Ambani was seen leaving the Wankhede Stadium midway through the match. His early exit highlighted the growing frustration within the organization as the team currently sits in eighth place on the points table, with only two wins against five defeats.
The defeat against CSK was particularly crushing. Chasing a target of 208 runs, the Mumbai Indians faltered and were bowled out for a mere 104 runs, marking a 103-run loss—their largest defeat in terms of runs. The situation became even more dramatic when Akash Ambani gestured towards fans to leave the stadium, a moment that quickly circulated on social media, emphasizing the distress surrounding the team.
The season has been defined by inconsistency, with big-name players failing to perform as a unit. Isolated strong performances have not been enough to compensate for the overall struggles. This lack of coherence has been noted especially after the leadership change from Rohit Sharma to Hardik Pandya. Under Pandya’s captaincy, the criticism has been mounting as fans and experts question the team’s direction.
Head coach Mahela Jayawardene, however, refused to blame player fatigue after their international commitments, stressing the need for rhythm and consistency instead. “In modern-day cricket, everyone is professional. The players returning from the World Cup are capable,” he stated after the match. “What we really need is consistency across all aspects of our game—both batting and bowling need improvement.”
Statistically, the performance of key players has also left much to be desired. Hardik Pandya has scored just 97 runs and taken three wickets in six games, while Suryakumar Yadav has managed 156 runs in seven outings. Jasprit Bumrah has claimed only two wickets, making it clear there’s a significant gap between expectations and results. In contrast, Tilak Varma, with 181 runs, has emerged as one of the few bright spots in this otherwise lackluster season.
“We need to find that space to compete. When we play our best cricket, we have a great chance. But confidence, focus, and discipline are crucial in the coming matches,” Jayawardene added.
With time running short in the season, the Mumbai Indians must find ways to turn their fortunes around. Akash Ambani’s departure from the game symbolizes the urgent need for a turnaround as the team faces a long road ahead.
