Barrack Defends Comments on Israel and Hezbollah Amidst Backlash

U.S. Ambassador Tom Barrack has responded to criticism over his recent remarks that some interpreted as equating Israel with Hezbollah. He insists that his comments reflect a practical view of the situation rather than a shift in U.S. policy.

During a speech at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, Barrack called the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah a “time out,” noting that trust is lacking on both sides. He suggested that Turkey should be given access to the F-35 program again, despite its purchase of Russia’s S-400 system. Barrack emphasized that only strong leadership has proven effective in the Middle East.

In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, he rejected claims that he was softening the U.S. stance on Hezbollah or Iran, aligning his views with President Trump’s “peace through strength” strategy. Barrack stated that the U.S. aims to stop the violence, strengthen Lebanese sovereignty, and reinforce Israel’s security.

Earlier discussions raised questions about whether Barrack’s comments signal a change from the previous hardline approach towards Hezbollah. He clarified that acknowledging mutual mistrust is necessary for sustainable peace and that the U.S. position on Hezbollah as a terrorist organization remains unchanged.

Diplomatic Challenges with Turkey

Barrack also addressed the complexities of Turkey’s participation in the F-35 program, calling the current situation “insane.” He highlighted Turkey’s vital role as an ally within NATO and stated that a resolution to the S-400 issue is possible with careful diplomacy. He assured that any agreement would meet the legal requirements set by U.S. laws.

He noted the importance of strong, central leadership in the region, asserting that such governance has led to stability and progress, contrasting this with the challenges faced by nations that attempted to quickly adopt Western-style democracies.

Barrack concluded by reiterating that the Trump administration’s policy is focused on peace through strength, supporting leaders who can effectively meet their people’s needs and create a secure environment in the region.
