Tilak Varma’s Maiden Century Leads Mumbai Indians to Victory
Tilak Varma celebrated a remarkable achievement on Monday, scoring his first IPL century and helping the Mumbai Indians secure a convincing 99-run victory against the Gujarat Titans. The match took place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, where Tilak’s performance mirrored a record set by Sanath Jayasuriya in 2008, marking him as one of the fastest century-makers for MI.
The game didn’t start smoothly for the Mumbai Indians, who managed just 46 runs during the powerplay, losing three wickets in the process. Tilak began slowly, scoring only 19 runs off his first 22 balls. However, after gaining confidence and adjusting to the pitch, he unleashed an incredible attack, amassing 82 runs off just 23 balls, shifting the momentum in favor of his team.
After the match, Tilak shared his approach: “I took it ball by ball in the first 20 deliveries and focused on getting my eye in. Once I settled down and understood the conditions, I backed my abilities and played my natural game.”
He finished unbeaten at 101 runs from 45 balls, hitting eight fours and seven sixes, leading the Mumbai Indians to a total of 199 for 5. Tilak emphasized the importance of staying calm and keeping things simple during intense moments. “I assessed what the team needed and focused on my basics. Trusting my skills was crucial today, and it led to great results. I’m really proud of myself,” he said.
Throughout his innings, Tilak formed vital partnerships, including a notable 52-run partnership with Naman Dhir for the fourth wicket and an impressive 81-run stand with captain Hardik Pandya for the fifth wicket.
In this IPL season, Tilak has amassed 144 runs in six matches with an average of 28.80 and an impressive strike rate of 187.01. The Mumbai Indians will aim to build on this success when they face the Chennai Super Kings on Thursday at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
