Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies and Yash Raj Films Set Sights on the Micro Drama Surge: Report

Two of Bollywood’s biggest production companies, Yash Raj Films and Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment, are reportedly looking into entering the micro drama sector, hinting at an exciting new trend in 2026.

Sources in the industry suggest that both studios are currently considering short-format scripted content through their digital divisions. The growing demand for quick and engaging entertainment, especially for mobile audiences, is driving this exploration. Although no official news has been released yet, insiders believe this move indicates a broader trend among traditional studios aiming to enhance their digital presence.

Yash Raj Films seems to be slightly ahead in this game, thanks to its online-focused branch, YRF Entertainment. This shift aligns with their recent strategy changes, especially following the appointment of Saugata Mukherjee. Mukherjee has a solid background in original programming, having helped develop successful shows for SonyLIV. His expertise is expected to play a pivotal role in YRF’s future digital initiatives.

On the other side, Red Chillies Entertainment has also been part of discussions around micro dramas. While they are still in the early stages of evaluating their plans, conversations are ongoing.

The interest in micro dramas comes as the Indian digital entertainment scene continues to grow. Several platforms, including JioHotstar’s Tadka, ZEE5’s Bullet, Amazon MX Player’s Fatafat, and Tata Play’s Shots, among others, have already tapped into this trend.

This potential shift is timely, as the overall interactive media market in India—covering audio streaming and unique storytelling formats—is expected to expand significantly by 2030.

Even though Yash Raj Films and Red Chillies Entertainment have yet to confirm these developments, the potential for fresh content in the form of micro dramas is an exciting prospect for fans and the industry alike.
