British Police Investigate Arson Attacks on Jewish Sites
British counterterrorism police are looking into a series of arson attacks targeting Jewish establishments in London. The attacks have raised concerns about possible links to Iranian groups.
Authorities from the Metropolitan Police are examining multiple incidents, including fires at synagogues and Jewish-affiliated organizations. The latest incident occurred at a north London synagogue, causing minor damage, but thankfully no injuries were reported.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans mentioned that investigators are considering claims from a group known as Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, which has claimed responsibility for these attacks. This group is suspected of having ties to the Iranian regime.
“We are aware of reports suggesting this group may be associated with Iran,” Evans stated. “We are exploring these connections as our investigation continues.”
The group has not only claimed arson efforts in London but also in Belgium and the Netherlands. Authorities have increased police presence in northwest London following recent attacks, including an arson incident that destroyed four Jewish charity ambulances.
Several suspects, aged from teens to those in their 40s, have already been arrested. Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis expressed his concerns about a rising tide of violence against the Jewish community. He emphasized the importance of acknowledging the danger this situation poses for society as a whole.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attacks, labeling them as “abhorrent,” and vowed that those responsible would face justice.
The severity of the situation intensified when the group threatened to target Israel’s embassy in London using drones, leading police to investigate reports of suspicious items nearby, though nothing harmful was found.
British officials have long highlighted Iran’s use of criminal networks to orchestrate attacks across Europe. MI5 has recently intercepted multiple potential plots linked to Iran.
Deputy Commissioner Matt Jukes issued a stern warning to anyone involved in these attacks, stating, “It’s a losing game,” noting that those involved will face severe consequences.
The investigation into these arson attacks continues as officials work to determine if they are part of a broader, coordinated effort linked to foreign influences.
