Shooting Incident in Kyiv Leaves Multiple Casualties
A tragic shooting occurred in Kyiv, Ukraine, on Saturday, leading to the death of six individuals and injuring 14 more, including a 12-year-old boy. The gunman, who had lived in the Donetsk region and originally hailed from Moscow, was killed by special forces.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, the shooter took four hostages during the attack, resulting in the death of one hostage and four others shot on the street. A woman later succumbed to her injuries at a hospital.
Witnesses captured harrowing footage of the incident, showing the gunman firing at a victim from close range, with bodies visible in the streets and courtyards.
Special Forces Respond Quickly
Ukrainian special forces stormed the supermarket after approximately 40 minutes of unsuccessful negotiations. Authorities reported that the number of injured may increase as more people seek medical aid. Among the injured are the young boy and a security guard at the supermarket.
President Zelenskyy mentioned that before the shooting, the assailant also set fire to an apartment, though it is unclear if anyone was hurt in that incident. He expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished for a quick recovery for those injured.
Investigation Underway
The shooter had a criminal history but held a valid weapons permit, according to the police. Investigations are ongoing by the National Police and the Security Service of Ukraine, with all aspects of the attack being closely examined.
A neighbor described the gunman as a quiet and educated individual who rarely interacted with others, adding to the shock of the day’s events.
